I lived there for 12 years, and it's never warm enough to swim. But there are a lot of water sports if you wear a wetsuit.

P.S. As for activities for which we'd like to be centrally located, we'll be visiting friends (all over SD County, including North County), probably do Wild Animal Bark, Balboa Park, maybe Torrey Pines hike.

We went to San Diego last April for spring break. It was not warm enough to swim.

But, we loved it. We went to safari, shopping, went to walk around the beach, lego land, and did some other touristy stuff. It was terrific but not swimming weather.

13:03 here. I lived in SD for five years, and found the water really cold even in August. Then again, I'm from an East Coast city where the water is normally low 80s in the summer. In comparison, the Pacific is really cold.

Pp who was told even July n august were not reliably warm to swim. We are planning a summer trip to LA/SD and looking forward to the beach and pools. Glad it will be warm enough to swim.


Warm enough in this case means you won't have to rent a wetsuit. It won't be pleasantly warm like Atlantic beaches.

I have been told by multiple sources that water isn't even reliably warm to swim in July/August. That being said, our boys swam in the heated LEGOLAND hotel pool last month. Most resort pools should be heated but I would not count on swimming at the beach. Our kids played in the sand last month but did not swim at the beach.

Former SD resident. No, the water will not be warm enough to swim, and it may be cold (I got married outdoors in April in SD, and guests were chilly). The water is barely warm enough even in August.

Any family friendly hotel/resort locations to recommend? My in-laws want something high end/luxurious and we want something kid friendly (i.e. good pool, kid-friendly dining, etc).
