I've found the screen addiction to be much more prevalent among men esp fathers of young kids who want to do nothing at home.

You're obviously boring and have nothing of value to say. You're obviously not interesting and he's bored with you as you're probably a boring person who rambles on about themselves.

bingo. and to the posters asking if we (the men who responded earlier) have said anything to our wives, at least I can say yes, I have. I asked nicely/politely/gently and indicated that this is our down time (kids are in bed) for just us. She apologizes and and agrees to do be on facetime/social media when she's got her alone time so that it doesn't interfere with "couples time". And at least for that one night, she puts her phone away. The next night though, it's as if the conversation had never happened.

I'm guilty of this. Truthfully, it's my escape. I can read about whatever I want and there's no interaction. Consider it my downtime. For DH, it's sitting in front of the TV.

When we go out, I ask him to hold my phone. The sitter has my number so I'm not comfortable going without it. But if he has it, I won't look at it.

Have you asked her to put the phone down and talk and hang out? What was her response? I don't really have this problem in my current relationship but the last guy I dated, when we went to dinner for the first time he made me lock my phone up in the car. (Not in a nasty, controlling way, but in a sweet way, and with a mischievous smile on his face.) It was very refreshing and we had a wonderful dinner with no distractions! Why don't you suggest a date night like that?

I can't stand being at the gym and have equipment being taken up by women (and some men) who are not exercising but reading their smartphones. Heck of a workout!

yup - whether it's on the couch or in bed, DW is completely addicted to her phone. And so many more women fall into this trap than are willing to admit (oh, and it's not a problem they say, how else can she keep up to date with all that's happening with her friends, sisters, etc.) Good grief
