They aren't accepting new patients.

When I contacted Inova Keller recently they said they didn't do any type of screening for autism-related issues. We are working with 6yo trying to tease apart behavioral issues, so I ended up at Children's.

I agree with requesting evaluation/ support from the school too while you wait on full evaluation. Your school may have some good behavioral support resources available.

Also consider looking into Dr. Shapiro's parenting classes, you can learn some good strategies there while you are figuring all of this out.

You can also ask the pubic schools to assess him even if he doesn't attend public school.

You may also want to consider initiating the IEP process in any case whether or not you find a private tester. In the classroom, they can do a functional behavioral analysis to help understand the triggers of behavior and put appropriate supports in place.

Your in-network options are Children's National Medical Center or the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. Both will have long wait times, at least initially. My advice is to make an apointment at both, and keep calling every 10 days or so to see if there's a cancellation. Keep whichever appointment comes through first, and make another parent really happy when they get off the wait list at the other.

OP here. We have BCBS federal basic, so we have to go in-network for coverage. There is out of network coverage.

Make the appt quickly as even the places that don't take insurance are already booking for feb/march. We're going to go private and submit to insurance.

Check with BCBS. Like PP said, I think Kennedy Krieger (KKI) is covered. Any appointment anywhere will be several months out, so just know to expect that.

In the meantime, I would recommend seeing a behavioral therapist. KKI has a great outpatient clinic in Columbia MD. You can also see someone closer in.

I think the only places that are in network are children's and kki (in Baltimore). For other providers, your reimbursement will depend on your out of network benefits. If you have any autism concerns, I recommend David Black at CAAT.

Pediatrician just recommended a neuropsych evaluation for our 6-year-old DS, but offered no referrals. Just said to find someone that takes our insurance. I don't even know where to start, and am also still coping with the need for the evaluation to begin with. Can anyone recommend a practice that will do a neuropsych evaluation and that takes federal blue cross blue shield insurance (basic). DS has been having behavior problems at home and now at school, including violent outbursts and trouble controlling himself and his behavior. He also has some self-harming behaviors. Thanks.
