I think CC is a fantastic resource for figuring out how to pay for college....particularly with merit.

I only see super elite kids posting on CC. Super elite with crushing inferiority complexes.

The parent forum is better. There's a thread for B+ kids that's very useful.

I find that all kinds of students are on CC. Some are very qualified and some are average students.

It is disconcerting to read CC for the first time because it is giving you the real picture of how well qualified college applicants are getting each year. After you get over the first rush of panic, you can use it as a great resource.

The trick is to read it when your kid is in MS or begining of HS, so that you can actually chart a path for your child. It is not for the kid who is aiming for a community college because of bad grades vs. aiming for community college for the value it gives you for your education dollars.

Community colleges are great, if they are part of a deliberate plan to eventually get to a Masters etc or because it gets you the qualifications for the job you are aspiring for. It is not the best thing if it is a fall back because you are not able to get admitted anywhere else - due to bad grades or bad prep.

No, not at all.

OP - certain forums are very useful. Others, no so much.

For all of its faults and pitfalls, there is some good information to be found on College Confidential. For many items, it is a better resource than the college counselor I'm paying.

If you're interested in what kinds of GPA/scores your kid needs to have a chance at a particular school, the Common Data Set is much more useful that College Confidential. Actual numbers from the entire class for that particular year, not just self-reporting whiz kids.

the Chance Me threads are not reflective of typical college applicants In fact, I sometimes think they're trolling...
I liked looking at profiles of accepted/rejected students at colleges where DC1 had an interest. The financial section was very helpful also

Welcome! You must be new here. CC has been discussed here for several years. Search the DCUM college threads for additional CC discussion.

Parent forums & Financial forums there can be very useful, especially if your kid is just starting high school. "Chance Me" section is ridiculous.

I visit CC in spurts and will also go there to post specific questions. When my oldest DS was in high school, CC was extremely useful to me.
