if you do mention it on the invitations, please don't use the word "attire" as suggested above. that would be more inappropriate than the suggestion of wearing black. oh my.

That Is silly. If they want to do a Star Wars theme party and he doesn't have a shirt, cheap Star Wars Ts are easy enough to pick up. Or he can wear all black. Or carry a light saber.
Rare is the boy who does not have anything Star Wars.
OP, this is a fun idea. The vast majority of parents are not the crazy fun sucking anti happiness dcum moms.
Most people will have a lot of fun with this theme, especially the kids.
Have some of your own kid's costumes/Star Wars stuff on hand to share if a kid comes without.
And ignore the anti fun crowd here.
Nobody's saying the party plans won't be "fun" - just that it's a PITA.
OP, the best thing to do would include something like this on the invitation: "feel free to wear a star wars shirt! We'll have extras on hand so everyone can join in the fun."
And then buy enough cheap shirts/clothing for all the kids to wear should anyone forget or not have a shirt. The burden of having a fun party should be on you and your son - not on other kids or parents complying with specific requests.

I would put "Star Wars or black attire suggested." and leave it at that.
Those who are interested in joining can find something. Those who can't or don't want to can still come to celebrate your son's birthday in whatever they wear.

Or if your son is set on black, pick up some cheap black Ts from Walmart or Michaels and make an iron on star wars logo for the front to give as party favors.

I wouldn't do it. Even if everyone does own a black outfit not everyone will remember to wear it to your party and then that will be an issue too. Keep is simple.

Ugh, bad enough when brides start requesting guests wear specific colors. Don't do it.
If the invite is obvious that it is a Star Wars party kids will probably want to wear a shirt if they own one.

This will be annoying. Most everyone has a black top or shirt, but not bottoms. Does your son expect parents to buy black clothing to come to your son's party?
Maybe if you want to buy outfits for everyone, to easily put on at the party? But I think it's over the top and kind of obnoxious.
