We sold the SFH and moved to a TH with 2 kids. Best decision ever. Kids are now 6 and 9. During the school year, they have after school activities that don't get us home until 6 or 7. During the summer, they go to camp all day and the pool in the evening and weekends.

Now we have no yard work for a yard we never used.

No need to dignify such dumb comments with an answer. Just smile, nod, and change the subject.

I live in a row house with one child, #2 due any day. It's been great. We do have a small front yard, and a back "yard" that was converted mostly to a patio. We have an end unit so a bit more outdoor space. Which means more outdoor space to manage. I wouldn't want anymore than what we have, to be honest.

We have a park with a large field one block away and lots of neighbors who we are close with. Sure, sometimes it would be nice to have more space, but... it would come at a cost of more money and more time, neither of which we have right now with two little kids.

You stare coldly at these small-minded, ignorant red-necks and say that all over the developed world children are being raised in apartments. I spent a few years of my childhood in a luxurious duplex in Paris! No need for a yard, the park was nearby. I also liked living in a house in the country. Children are very flexible as long as fun is to be had!

I'm the PP who lived on Capitol Hill. My kids spent plenty of time outdoors, even when we lived in a row house. Still didn't really miss the yard that much. Park and sidewalk were fine.

We lived in a row house on Capitol Hill, with no yard to speak of, until our oldest kid was 11. It was fine. I loved taking younger kids to the park to play--so pleasant to walk and then sit and chat with neighbors. They also played on the sidewalk a lot--with chalk or matchbox cars or riding trikes/bikes, etc.

We moved to a house with a yard, which was great for tweens/young teens. They spent a lot of time playing soccer and wiffle ball out there, etc.

Now they are older teens and hardly ever use the yard except to read in the hammock.

You need new colleagues more than you need a SFH.

I have two kids and neither seem to care. There are plenty of kids in our neighborhood.

Raising kids in a condo and we own a sfh out of state for rental income. The parks by the condo are their playground. It works for us and people can say whatever they want. Sounds no -- I see no problem at all with a townhouse.

It's not a big deal. Compared to what some kids have, a townhouse is a castle. You probably will get the urge to find a bigger dwelling after the second kid, though.

Having a discussion with coworkers earlier and they asked me how can raise my kids in a townhouse and how they made sure to have a SFH before having kids or at least upgrading before having a second. Then said I was depriving them of a yard. I have a backyard, maybe not the size of a SFH yard, but it's a good size. My kids have made friends in our neighborhood and love their schools. I don't understand the big deal. Anyone else raising kids in a townhouse?
