OP here, DK applied to Honors as well but didn't hear anything back about that yet. Maybe they go through them in order of submission although DK send in application only 1 day early.

If a kid's stats are very clearly higher than the average (or lower, for that matter)...then yeah, they'll generally just accept. At a school where everyone applying has high stats, more goes into the process.

My son was admitted to two NESCAC schools which are great for him, but they are not elite schools by DCUM's definitions. In both acceptance letters, the admissions people both commented on his essay choice. One said she was very moved by his essay.

I'm not really sure how they were able to comment on his essay when "they don't read a damn thing."

NESCAC schools aren't remotely the same. CC for example gets 6000 applications and admits 2000. VCU gets 17,000 applications and admits about 10,000. It's a straight numbers game with that kind of volume.

You are confusing early action, and single choice early admissions, with early admissions. Early admission merely means that you completed the application quickly, and thus didn't have to wait to hear. You can apply to multiple early admissions schools.

VCU is a fine school, but OP's son is not obligated to attend there if he does not want go.

Yes Richmond is why DK chose it as a top choice. Glad to hear PP's DK is enjoying it. City living versus rural campus was a plus. I enjoyed my rural campus but to each his/her own.

DC is leaning toward deferring a year at least to pursue a passion so need to look into that.

BTW, I wasn't complaining, just surprised at such a quick reply.

Probably because OP mentions honors and marit aid - both of which are considered more generously in the EA round.

Congrats! And yes, it could be a numbers game, but it could also be that they read his essay and knew he'd be a great fit. Hope you celebrate the good news!

DC applied early admission on Nov 15 and received an acceptance packet yesterday. Guessing that depending on scores/grades it an automatic acceptance. Pretty sure they didn't have time to read the essay - hoping someone will read it when they look at the honors college app and for merit though.
