They aren't broke. They're pretty well off. They've spent hundreds of dollars on my nephew for Christmas. I was with them at Black Friday shopping this evening and saw with my own eyes them drop $600 on presents.

Seriously, depending on the way she said it it could have been unfeeling and unappreciative. But if he was smothered in gifts, this makes sense and your SIL was trying to warn you not to talk about it.

First Pp here. That's really weird and nasty. I don't know how I would react in the moment- probably not aggressively because I would be so taken aback. If I can muster it, I might just say I don't know why you told me that. Ugh. I would minimize time with her.

I don't even know. We were sitting in the kitchen looking through black friday ads just the two of us. And said "oh I thought I would tell you that we wrapped that train y'all got him and we are going to put it under the tree from Santa"

I did this one year when DS was really little, like 2 or 3. Hanukkah was early that year and about a month after DS's birthday where he had received lots of
gifts at his birthday party and wasn't really aware of it all. I put a few away to rewrap for Hanukkah, but I would never have told the gift givers that. What would have possessed her to do that?

For my nephew's birthday, DH and I got him a train. That was the end of October. We assumed he got his train. Tonight SIL lets me know that she took the train and re-wrapped it and is going to put it under her Christmas tree from Santa. I sat there completely dumbfounded.
