Do you need to spend $70K to get recruited by a D1 school?

A friend's daughter just finished up there. She is off to play tennis at a top D1 school.

Here is a more recent article about them starting a football team. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/19/sports/football/high-school-football-inc.html

The NYT did an article about IMG in 2004 and they interviewed some of the kids. You can search their names to see what happened to them. I don't think any of the kids they interviewed ended up in a career as a professional athlete. One of them got briefly onto the Orioles and then got released.

I don't understand this. Even if your kid does get a scholarship, there aren't any schools that give away $70K/year ones. Wouldn't it just be better to save that money, put it in a college account, and just hire a really good private coach/be on an amazing club team?

I had a friend who went there for a year or two, a long time ago. Also for tennis. He went to USC -- I don't think he played tennis there.

DD has a girl at her school who is number one in our state (tennis). She is going on athletic scholarship to a top 20 school. Really don't think you need IMG if your kid is super talented.

95% athletics with a 5% emphasis on academics. You might have an athlete on your hands, but not a very bright one.

I'm the Tennis friend PP. Parents paid the whole thing. It was basically a wash since she got a full scholarship for college. Kind of a gamble if you ask me.

That is a lot of money even for DC high cost standards.

There is some financial aid but it mainly goes for football and basketball. Most families just pay full freight.

I have a friend that did it for tennis. She got a full D1 scholarship to a Big East school. She considered turning pro after college but was told that she would be a low level journeyman.

She did love her IMG experience though.

Maybe try the boarding school section of the website "college confidential"? They have got a ton of threads on boarding schools and might have a thread on IMG academy.

Does anyone know anything about this boarding school for student-athletes?
