I was six years old when I went with my family to Greece. I still have clear memories of the Parthenon and the Acropolis, climbing around ruins, and then a later excursion to the beaches. My parents never indicated it was a chore.

Have you done any of these with a 3-5 year old? I hate having kids that age on a cruise. It just isn't fun or relaxing unless you have a child who is fine being with strangers in the kid club all day. Alaska was great with my oldest at that age because he actually does mountain and rock climbing. My middle child is not nearly sturdy and he would have been miserable had we taken him. Now that he's 10 and the youngest is that age we would go back. All of my kids love China, anywhere in the Caribbean and Europe is a no-brainer.

But you may be able to see Russia from where you are staying in Alaska

Any season = stay in same time zone, any place that has a separate bedroom for the kid(s) and a kitchen.

Thanksgiving - Wouldn't travel if I could help it

Christmas - Key West, Carribean

Spring break - Cruise (Carribean, Bahamas)
