The information is out there and readily available. It is a matter of time. If you don't have the time and have the money, then like anything else (lawn care, house cleaning, food shopping...) it would be worth it.

Yes, I'm very glad we used someone. We had a one-time consult for $500 just to generate a list. We were all pretty much at sea before then. My college-bound kid doesn't fit neatly into a profile and the school college counselor really wasn't of any help.
Consultant assessed the fit of the schools he was looking into and provided a list of 15-20 based on his interests and stats for us all to research.
