Yes, you can get custom made clothes for a great price in Shanghai--the quality of the workmanship will be great but you will have to be careful of the quality of the fabric.

Jade and tea are good suggestions. I wouldn't get clothes or leather products. Many are made from dog and cat skins but labeled as something else.

At least in Shanghai, there are some very cool antique and curio shops (and street vendors). If you like that kind of thing, China can be a goldmine. For example, 1960s era Mao and Communist art and collectibles. Plenty of furniture and artwork too but that doesn't sound like what you are looking for. This is in Shanghai but I have to assume there are similar shops in Beijing.

I'll second the tea recommendation if you know what variety you want.

Nah, the quality is crap. That scroll painting looks cool in the airport shop but do you really need it or will it just wind up rolled up in the closet for 10 years?

My husband now travels often to Beijing. Is there anything I particular you'd buy there? Can't ask him to go shopping g for kids clothes etc because he does not have the time but, any particular goodies from airport stores, food, etc?
