Terriers are territorial for sure--but it's not a bad thing. They an odorless, athletic, loyal, beautiful, smart and full of personality. Great family dogs. Not for a first time dog owner, of course--unless you get an older one.

Only if labs bite! WHFTs are very touchy.

Couldn't disagree more. I have a terrier mix (she looks kind of like this) and she meets all of OP's requirements.

I have a Chinese Crested and I think he's the perfect breed (at least for me!)- doesn't shed, doesn't smell, likes walks but doesn't require long ones, loves people...

+1. Love my Havanese. No shedding, barks with purpose, potty trained in one week, medium energy pup.

My son desperately wants a dog and I'm considering it. I do not want one that sheds (been dog sitting recently and house is covered with dog hair), do not want one that barks all the time (dog sat another one that did that!), and it needs to be small enough that my 12 year old can walk him/her easily.

I grew up with mutts...so might just go that route. But if we decide to actually specify a breed or specific mix, any suggestions?
