I'm so bad at birthdays. I have forgotten many. It doesn't mean I don't love the person; it means I'm bad at knowing what day it is and connecting that to someone's birthday. My father was the same way. I recall wishing him a happy birthday and he was surprised that it WAS his birthday; he'd forgotten.

It's fine to be hurt, but I wouldn't make some sweeping generalization about anything from this. Look at the whole picture of the relationship.

Yeah, my dad stopped remembering about 20 years ago. I'm the oldest. But the oldest child in his "new" family has a birthday 2 days after mine. You'd think that would trigger his memory, but nope.

I've stopped caring about myself, but now make damn sure he remembers my kids. Nice guy, shitty dad.

My husband's mom called him on his birthday recently, but it was to remind him to wish his cousin -- who shares the same birthday -- a happy birthday. It was so bizarre that my husband decided to not remind her that it was his birthday, too...

Neither parent called me. I got a text. I then texted them when it was their birthdays a few weeks ago. Much nicer than enduring a call.
