Some of my family are ivy league educated (multiple people), rocket scientist, almost Nobel prize winner, etc. Others are welfare mother of eight, factory worker, failed plumber turned taxi driver, unemployed, disabled, drunk. Then others are in between -- hairdresser, accountant, legal secretary.

I'm sorry that some people have no idea what you're talking about but I can totally relate. My husbands family are rednecks to the max. Hubby is first college grad from his side of the family (certainly can be successful without that, I know!) but his family just drives me up the freaking wall. We haven't cut them off yet but TBH I wish he just would.
No, it's not the college/no college thing.
His sister is 2 months younger than me, loving the fact that she "only has to work two days a week but the government gives me enough money that it's like I work five days a week! And I get almost free childcare!"
The constant "I hate black people and f*gs" coming from his dad in front of his kids and grandkids.
His 16 year old sister (half sister...many years apart) screaming the n bomb if she doesn't get her way.
I look at the way SIL's kid vs ours is going to grow up and let's just say it's different. I literally hate spending any time with them.
So yes, I can sympathize.

I have parts of my extended family like this. While I don't "cut" them out, I also don't go out of my way to do things with them. We just don't have much in common except grandparents. When you cut out conversations about politics and religion - because those topics are certainly off-limits now - there isn't much to discuss. Everyone is polite but we just don't click. It was different when we were kids so I do have some very fond memories of them.

Just Wow! One of them may surprise you and really to cut people off for that? Perhaps you can loosen up and let your hair down around them? Have fun?

I've seen too many of my rich but crass, hoity-toity, nose-in-the-air family members cut off other family members because they were too poor, too dumb, too this, too that. Through no fault of their own.

I would never do this in a million years.
