We've done the Keys many times - my kids don't like Key West but they love the middle keys! Try looking at Marathon, Islamorada, Key Largo..

we did not have have a car either time we went - stayed at the reach resort one time, rented a house off duval another time.

I've done both, drove from Miami once and flown directly in two other times. The drive from Miami can be a very fun experience and I'd recommend it if you like to drive and see the sights along the way. However, I don't know that I'd like to do it again. The one time that I drove I parked my car at the hotel and never touched it again during my stay. Btw, the drive back to Miami was not nearly as fun.
Flying into Key West was much easier and afforded some beautiful views along the way. I flew direct from Atlanta, a major hub, so it's no tougher than flying to most other places

There are pedicabs you can take as well - they may only fit 2 people, and regular taxis in Key West for further distances.

If you're flying in from Miami, I'd recommend renting a car and driving to Key West. Parking at hotels can be expensive, so look into whether two one-way rentals would be cheaper. I went to a wedding there a couple years back. We flew into the Key West airport and took a cab to our hotel right off Duval. We didn't need a car at all. Most guests didn't rent one (including the ones with kids) unless they drove in from Miami.

How do you get from Miami airport to Key West without renting a car? Are there frequent shuttles? How much are they typically? TIA

No need for car if your hotel is close to Duval. The hotels further out have shuttles.

No car needed, it is very walkable. We honeymooned there years ago and rented moped for fun. You could rent a car for a day or 2 if you want to explore. Where are you staying?

Is Key West doable without renting a car?
