It would be fine in my family too. This is how we grew up, as the only family our relatives knew in the DC area.

This is not unusual, this happens in my family. We have been hosts many times, even to people we don't know, as part of a bigger group. Sometimes it has even been the first time meeting the person, but it's always been a great connection.

I would have no problem saying "no, that doesn't work for us." I think it's one thing for a person to offer to host and another thing to ask - there are plenty of hotels and Airbnbs for those who want to visit the area.

My family is like this and we're good with it. We're kind of like the more the merrier.

I think the first scenario is slightly weird, but would have no problem with hosting a relative and his/her friend.

Happens all the time in my family. The relatives doing the asking are always close enough that I have never bat an eye. Actually I have had a few college age cousins come and bring their (polite, respectful, well-behaved) friends and kids always find that really fun!

Same here. DC is a wonderful city and I was happy to share my home with my friends and their friends/family.

In the last year, I've had two people from separate sides of my family ask if they can invite another person to stay at my house so they can visit DC. One husband of a relative asked to bring his daughter and her son (the daughter is not my relative's child) to sightsee because they've never been here before. I've met her a few times, but I would never invite her to my home myself. The other relative is a 40+ woman who wants to hit up DC for the weekend and bring a friend from her hometown. I've never met her friend before and she wants her to stay the weekend?

I've turned them both down. But, I seriously can't imagine asking a relative to Air B&B their home for someone else besides me & my nuclear family.

Is this unusual, or fairly common?
