Bumping this thread for new suggestions. can anyone recommend an area with some eclectic little shops to browse? It will be two adults, no kids (hurray!). Already booked a hotel downtown and restaurant reservation in Church Hill. TIA!

It is my hometown and my family still lives there. Here are my recommendations (just my opinion):

1). Maymont House (do you mean the Dooley Mansion)? No that isn't a must do. If the weather is nice sure Maymont is fun, but if you don't have kids with you I can think of tons of other things to do.

2). VMFA (Virginia museum of fine art) is excellent, to me that is a must do. And the Virginia Historical Society museum is practically next door, I would go there as well.

3). No, there aren't wineries around, you need to head west via 64 towards Charlottesville for that. BUT RVA is a microbrew town, so there are many breweries to visit if that's your fancy.

4). The food scene is EXCELLENT. Call and make a reservation NOW for Saturday night

5). Get drinks at the rooftop bar at Quirk

6). Visit one of the islands on the James

7). Go to Churchill, take a tour of St. John's church

8). Visit carytown

9). Have fun

Cary Street, if you like Old Town Alexandria. There's a riverfront walk, and University of Richmond campus is gorgeous (near Cary Street)

Go for a free tour at Stone Brewing.

The art museum is very good.
Sorry, I haven't done anything else in Richmond.

Art museum is excellent. Try a Segway tour downtown or an electric car tour of Hollywood cemetery. Lots of history. Good food.

The Post just did a big thing on Richmond. I forget if it was the travel section or the food section but it was in the last 2 weeks. The art museum is very good - a good selection of art and decorative objects/furniture. Last time we went the restaurant in the museum was excellent for a sit down lunch.

Long story, but my husband and I will probably head to Richmond for a quick stay- Sat morning through Sunday mid-afternoon. We have our hotel already, but are looking for things to do. Is the Maymont House a must-do? What about the art museum? And, any good wineries near by?

Alternatively, I'd also welcome suggestions for other places close to here (within a 2 hour drive). Charlottesville maybe?
