I just built a raised bed last weekend. I lined the bottom with 1/2 inch hardware cloth to keep burrowing animals eat the veggies from below.

Depends on the critters you have.

We live in the middle of NE DC and have our vegetable garden in two large, unprotected raised beds. The sunflowers were denuded by squirrels, but that was funny enough to watch that I didn't mind. Otherwise, our plants were mostly left alone.

On the other hand, my grandparents had an acre near the mountains where deer, raccoons, etc. roamed freely. They had their awesome veg garden protected by 8-foot-tall wire fencing.

If you want to grow berries, you'll have to have a net over the bushes in summer.

Can anyone help? I hope to build a small kitchen garden and need it protected from all the critters who would otherwise consume it. What are the basics i need, to get started?
