Why would you take an AP in the summer? Never heard of that. I have heard of kids taking college classes in the summer, but obviously those aren't APs.

Mine took

1 - 9th
3 - 10th
6- 11th
5 - 12 th

My kids (several years ago) took 1 freshman year (it was fine, didn't count for anything, don't know why everyone is all up in arms about it - Human Geography btw), 2 sophomore year, 4 junior year, and 6 senior year.

We have a "magnet" kid that opted to stay in our home high school. He is taking 2 APs as a freshman. He'll probably take APs in all 4 major subjects next year which will give him the option of choosing IB if he wants to and still graduating with a respectable # of APs. His two AP classes are his favorite, he likes the mixed ages - and he has a great teacher for both.

Really? I didn't read it that way at all. More to do with the families pushing more on APs in Ws so there is a difference. You can look at the stats on number of APs taken, and pass rates. They are published for every school. They do vary from school to school across the county.

Honestly, the fact that MCPS is allowing freshman to take college courses is ridiculous. No wonder so many college are doing away with them.

Need to call our PP's distinction between "W school kid" and "regular school kid". That is despicable.

My W school kid took 10. DC was with the normal advanced group, plenty of kids taking about the same number, and certainly some taking more. Took 1, 1, 3, 5 by year. Should have taken only 4 sr year, not that a particular class was hard, but 5 was 1 too many. DC got 4s and 5s on all the tests and did get college credit for all but one class, although is choosing not to graduate early.

My B+ student...took 1 sophomore year is taking 2 junior year and will probably take 2 or 3 more senior year. They are like the equivalent of honors classes from a generation ago.

w-school advanced - probably around 9-10
regular school top tier kid - probably 6-8

It depends on which HS and which subjects your child prefers.
Some HSs let/encourage freshmen to take an AP course. Other HSs basically forbid it.
Over the past 6 or 8 years different schools have had widely varying amounts of math acceleration this has changed the number of AP classes from year to year.

My guess is that if you don't take 6, one sophomore, two junior and three senior year you have totally missed the boat.

There are a good number of students that take two as sophomores and five as juniors but then may not take more than two as seniors because class selection
starts to become limited unless the student feels equally strong in math, science, English, social studies and maybe a foreign language.
