But you really can't. A Bob book could mean a variety of levels.

Our school sends home reading leveled books twice a week. There's a number on the back (something like 1 through 20-something).

What does your K'er bring home for reading? Maybe it's different at other mcps schools?


The first BOB in the series. How I hated those. I can now recommend MUCH BETTER for the K set:
1. Ms Rhonda's readers. Like BOB, except pleasant.
2. The whole series of Toon Books, which - gasp - even have guided reading levels on them (1 to 3 I believe). There are some real works of art in there, and they're all interesting.

This is where my DS was last year in K. Came into 1st not much better....but the last 4 weeks it's like a lightbulb went off and it's happening!

Doubt he'll be reading Road Dahl on his own anytime soon, though. But I am happy to read them to him for now.

Kids read when they are ready. I'm not concerned that he's on 1. Most kids are not very high- some are, most are not, All we can do is support them where they are are.

Useless post. You're going to get a ton of people bragging about their kids. The people who respond to these posts are usually the outliers; the vast pool of average isn't going to waste their time to respond.

Trajectories will vary enormously and you cannot tell in K how they will develop. He has to enjoy the process. Please, don't ever push him.

DC1 was reading BOB books in K. He started on the Harry Potter series and went on a Roald Dahl binge in 1st grade.

DC2 was reading the next level up from BOB books in K. So far she has read Charlotte's Web, The Tale of Despereaux, Just So Stories, the first harry Potter in 1st grade.

I strongly suspect it's because my kids have seen me reading for pleasure ever since they can remember, that they got the reading bug too.

Those reading campaigns shouldn't be "read to your kids", they should be "read for yourself, and your kids will follow".
