Pick an open group with people not standing super close, pauses in the conversation, looking outside of the group at times. Find the nicest looking person. Ask "do you mind if I join you?"

If you are picking groups where people are closed, talking rapidly about a subject they are all very interested in, and you try to insert yourself by kind of eavesdropping and offering a comment, it isn't going to work. They are going to blow you off.

You have a strange (sarcastic?) way of expressing yourself, OP.

I mean this as nicely as possible, but is there a chance you come off as "a little too much" to others? Your posts have a little flair for the dramatic, which of course is totally fine if that's your personality. But sometimes people can seem a little too much over the top when meeting new people and it rubs them them wrong way.

I just spent a week out west. I met some of the nicest locals. So as soon as my youngest is off to college I'm moving. It is not YOU. It is this area.

It helps to join organized groups where you share an interest and do the activity together. Just going up to strangers at a concert/event doesn't work unless you're both attracted and interested in dating each other, as a rule. Making friends takes time and regular meeting up at activities you both do.

I go to events and have great conversations with strangers, but that's as far as it goes. You have to look nonthreatening, make people laugh, and be fun to talk to, but even then, a lot of people just don't like talking to strangers.
