It isn't a serious school.

UMD is way better. just look at the success stories from umd

Ok. You keep thinking that.

They are not so starkly different in terms of the quality that a Maryland resident should choose UNC over UMD.

UNC and UVa supporters always point to the rankings but, seriously, what measurable qualities UNC/UVa have over UMD? I am really curious.

"A Story Of Institutional Failure And Fumbled Opportunities"

http://paperclassinc.com/story-institutional-failure-fumbled-opportunities/

“I’ve always felt that Lance Armstrong made a fatal mistake by sitting back and waiting for actions to be taken against him since he clearly had broken the rules,” a UNC-CH Board of Governors member wrote in an email. “If he had stepped forward and taken responsibility, forfeited his Tour de France wins, and apologized, he would have continued to be thought of as a winner who stumbled, acknowledged his errors, returned his awards and re-established his integrity…

“…Instead, he did the opposite; waited for it to be done to him, not by him, and thus changed the course of his life. I don’t know if this analogy works in UNC’s case but sometimes the thing that you perceive to be the worst, is actually the door out.”

Sadly, UNC-Chapel Hill has still not found that door."

The coddling of athletes is a real black eye for Carolina (a pretty good school, IMO). However, I have no doubt the same thing goes on at other sports factory schools. No doubt. But Carolina got caught, big time.

Were classes academically rigorous?

Well that is why it's a "public ivy".

Were the classes academically rigorous? Are you suggesting that North Carolinians are stupid?

DC is debating attending UNC Chapel Hill. Really likes the the hustle and bustle of a big school with school spirit. The university by charter requires that over 80% of the school be from
N. Carolina. The other public ivies (Michigan, UVA, UCLA, Berkeley) have a higher percentage of out of state students. Would love to know more about your kids' (or your experience) at Chapel Hill. What was the experience like being from out of state when almost all the other kids around you are from North Carolina? Were classes academically rigorous? What about job placements?

TIA.
