The problem with the people who insist on buying "designer" breeds from breeders and say that the only dogs in shelters are pits with "issues" is that you're just straight wrong. Most of my friends and family members have adopted from shelters or rescues- and out of about 15 people, one has a pit mix, and one has a dog with issues. The rest of us have really great family dogs. I think this is a lie that people who buy dogs from breeders say to make themselves feel better, but it's not true.

Same here. I got slammed on dcum a while ago for pointing out that shelters are often full of pit bulls and pit mixes. I can't have and don't want a dog like that. I need a small breed because I live in a 1000 sq ft house. I got my puppy from a breeder and that was my choice. I also didn't want an abused dog or one with issues. Maybe that will work for me in the future, but not at the time we got our puppy.

There are plenty of non-pit mixes at rescues. A lot are lab mixes. My sister, my best friend and I all adopted from (different) rescues and all got lab mixes.

My sister bought her golden retriever for $3,000.

I've been going to shelters for a while now in DC and 90% of what they have are pit bull mixes. I have zero desire to have a pit bull but I completely support the idea of adopting from a shelter. So it's a conundrum.

My sister got her cocker spaniel for $800 this summer.

I judge you especially for buying a bulldog or labradoodle. Breeding Bulldogs and labradoodles are some of the most abusive things someone can do.
