Depends on what you want in life. Financially NC will be easier, but near DC you would have access to many more cultural things, etc. You could make it work in DC especially if you are naturally frugal, but it will be harder.

NC is more backwards in terms of culture (see the fixation with who uses what bathroom) and if it's the research triangle area, not really less expensive in the aggregate.

It will be until our son starts school most likely. I am a self employed music teacher and net $35,000. We live in the south right now.

Is 100k enough to live comfortably for a family in Sterling or Ashburn area? We don't have student loans or credit card debt. Dh is super frugal. We rarely eat out on the weekends. 86k seems like it would get you a decent home in NC. Is it a no brainier to go with NC?
