We don't associate with the one active duty family in the neighborhood not because they're military but because they are puts their conservative Christian agenda on everyone, he's a misogynist and they aren't nice people.

Officer families - yes, enlisted families - no.

I'm in N Arlington and we have a few military families in the smaller original rental houses. Honestly, I have never run into them since my kids are younger, but I wouldn't actively not try to be friends with them. If our kids were friends, why not? Personally, I'm not a fan of the military/police mentality so I probably wouldn't want to socialize with them though.

I have neighbors who are military and everyone is very friendly.

Two families that have lived here after living all over have said this is one of the most welcoming places they've been. We're in Arlington.

That other thread is not my experience at all.

Of course! We live in Arlington, near Ft. Myer and there are lots of military families at our elementary school. My best friend moved here when her husband was assigned to the Pentagon. We met through a playgroup when our kids were toddlers and fortunately her husband retired from the military before being moved someplace else.

I've found the military families in our community to generally be very friendly. The only one i had much interaction with who rubbed me the wrong way was parents of a good friend of DS's who, in almost every conversation, complained about what they hated about DC and how they couldn't wait for their next move.

No, but we are friends with State Department employees who move around just as much. We are friends with many former military families. The only military families in our neighborhood have been foreign military. Our neighborhood is the first choice for current military. At school, we have had acquaintances who are military.

I don't know any, so no.

+1 We were until they moved but would again. Logistics were an issue. Hard to get to each other except by car. A big deal for us non-military to get on their base where there home is, etc.

Yes, but my husband is retired military. Growing up here I didn't know anyone military. Most of our friends are from when husband is active duty. He was enlisted so many officers/families are very stand offish to us and most of the enlisted we know are much younger. Have no issue being friends and even if they move, we have life long friends because of it. There is a very specific military culture and divisions. We had neighbors who were military who were very standoffish.. They kept asking us to babysit for free but would never return the favor (she expected me to do it several times a week for school, shopping, going out) or was actually friendly. I finally stopped the relationship as I got tired of being used.

I was surprised by those responses too. We have one military family in our neighborhood and I'm not besties with the mom, but I don't avoid them because they are military.
