Bed runner.

I use a half folded cotton blanket on the end of my quilts. Cotton folds thinner than microfiber. You can buy bed runners at Kohls.

Bed runners are decorative only (no function really).

We take a quilt and fold it in half....it has the same look but, if we get cold, we can unfold it and make it useful.

NP here and I hate those things. I hate pretty much any home decor that serves no purpose, but these are especially bad because they aren't even lovely.

I think of coverlets as serving the purpose you describe.

Don't you find that thing in hotels so totally useless? It's not a blanket and its in the way. Use a beautiful throw blanket that is not as bulky but can still be used to snuggle under when you don't want to get all the way into bed - like when you read or watch TV

You don't want a bed skirt or dust ruffle, those go between the mattress and the box spring. I'll admit I've never heard of or seen a bed runner. I guess it's a modern day version of a bed spread. Attractive, but serves no purpose.

You know how most hotel beds are done all in white but have a colorful strip of fabric draped across the bottom? Kind of like a table runner but wider. What is that called? I know I could do it with a folded blanket, but that's bulkier. Also, i don't sew so i don't want to try to make one.
