Around 20%. I round up or down a bit depending on how good service is, but always use 20% as the starting point.

What about tipping the owner of the salon if he/she does your hair? Do the same rules apply?

I always tip 20%.

My haircut costs $250 because of the dye and everything. I do tip 20% but it seems a little ridiculous to tip more than $50.

My haircut is $45 and I tip $20. Have been doing it for years.

I round up to whatever the easiest cash amount is.

My nails are $32, I pay $40
My eyebrows are $12, I pay $15
I tip way more for my son's hair cut than my own, because he is a pill in the hair cuttery chair.

She's playing you. 25% is not the norm. I usually do 20%.

TL, DR: is 25% now considered the new 20%, the absolute basement from which you can only go up unless you had abysmal service and a problem?

I just had a massage. It lasted 45 minutes and when I was signing the credit card receipt, I added a 20% tip on top of the total.

The massage lasted exactly as long as was agreed on beforehand (i.e., no "extra minutes") and was adequate and satisfactory. No problems, but then again, nothing particularly notable or unusually good.

When the masseur saw me filling in the tip line for an amount that was exactly equal to 20% of the total, she made a face. I asked if there was a problem, because I honestly thought this was going to be one of those situations where the employee doesn't actually get the whole tip and the owner keeps some. So I said, "Is this OK??" meaning, 'you're going to get the cash, right?"

And I was stunned when she replied that really, the right amount of tip was an amount she named (and was approximately 25% of the bill).

I threw a couple of ones on the counter, and I won't go back to her due to her grubby rudeness , but it occurred to me that I committed a transaction faux pas.
