Yes, they are indeed plunked in people's yards. The whole world doesn't look like your neighborhood. Drive through a suburb that is less than 30 years old and you'll see them. There's usually one or two per street.

There are green electrical transformer boxes in yards on every street in my neighborhood. They are not the stupid cable posts. This is what you have when below-ground lines are running through the neighborhood.

FWIW, we played on those things all the time when I was a kid. They are not electrified or dangerous, unless something goes very wrong. Obviously, it's extremely rare but you don't want your kid touching that thing if there's a problem. You can plant small shrubbery around them but if it ever needs to be service, they are going to dig up your plants.

Quick story: When I was growing up, a drunk teenager come down our street and plowed into one of those boxes on the cul de sac. It totally knocked out our power for a good 12 hours. The next day, the kid's father made him go door to door apologizing to everyone.

I had one of those in my yard growing up and sitting on top of it was my favorite reading spot in the whole world.

OP Here, it's one of those dark green square electric boxes about 2 feet high and 4 feet across. We're not talking a dinky little cable "stump".

We had one in our backyard growing up and my sister and I, and all our friends, climbed all over that thing regularly. It was nice and warm and hummy in chilly Midwestern autumns. (Meanwhile my SAHM was probably busy playing bridge in the kitchen. Ah, the 70s.)

Anyway, so far as I know none of us turned into horrible mutants from it and it would not deter me from buying a house with one in the yard now I'm an adult. Frankly I think they're a lot less noticeable/ugly than the awful telephone poles/wires that run along our street and connect across the front yards to everyone's homes in my current neighborhood, and even those I barely notice anymore unless a big storm comes up and I'm worrying about a tree branch falling on them.

Not ideal, but definitely not a deal breaker if everything is right (price, location, etc). I would expect the house to be slightly below comps, all things equal.

If this is the thing you call a dealbreaker, then you must have A LOT of good choices. We never once considered this a problem.... and we have a house with it. We were focused on commute, schools, interior being decent, not too much noise from streets, price point, neighborhood, etc., etc. Electrical and telecom boxes exist... and do not make the list of anything I consider when buying a home.

No, I would not.

Would you buy a house with one of those big green electrical boxes in the yard? It's not front and center, but more to the side and back and it's not too obvious unless you know to look for it, but still, I feel hesitant. To me, it's an eye sore. DH is on the fence. Obviously, we can't hide it with bushes or anything and we'd have to be diligent about keeping the kids from playing/climbing on it when they're outside.

Plus, I wonder about electro magnetism radiating from that thing. Too low to be worried?

Is it a deal breaker?
