You are referring to the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Sometimes called the "Basic skills test." That tests reading, math, social studies, grammar, etc. It is not the same as the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test to which OP refers. The IAAT tests a student's readiness to take Algebra... that is all.

Same in Baltimore County when I was growing up. We took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in 4th and 5th grades (possibly 3rd grade too). It was the only standardized test we ever took until the SATs in high school.

It's an algebra aptitude test that assesses students' current abilities in a variety of areas (computation, concepts and symbols, etc.) that is used to identify students whose mathematical skills are ready to progress to algebra or who need pre-algebra to develop those skills. IMO there is also a developmental piece--some kids are ready for algebra earlier or later than others. Kids have the option to take algebra much earlier than the once did, but it is not always the best option for every kid.

Hi My son is in 5th grade in Loudoun school dist. I heard that there is an IOWA test sometime in DEC/Jan. Does anyone know what kind of test is that and what are the topics for that test?
What level he needs to be prepared?
Are there are sample test questions to prep him up based on. Appreciate any help !!!!!
