I wouldn't do this- paint will chip over time and you will need to repaint.

Did you have to sand them first? Or just paint over the existing finish?

+1
How did you paint them?

I think I may have used a foam brush to avoid brush strokes. It was 12 years ago, and my memory is a little rusty. It was easy, though. Two coats of paint. Impervo goes on soooooo beautifully.

Sanded lightly with a fine grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere.

Lots of mystery? You're lazy bc there are HUNDREDS of blogs about this. Have you ever been on pinterest?

Sure - lots of companies offering paintable doors that go on ikea. We bought doors from semi handmade. It was a very good experience. Our doors are walnut veneer - not the diy paintable kind, but i can attest to the quality of their product and ease that they work with ikea boxes. I think semi handmade requires that you do your own painting, while one of the other companies (maybe kokeena?) offers to paint it for you? I might be misremembering, though.

I've been painting some of my non-IKEA furniture with chalk paint and I was curious to see if I could paint my kitchen cabinets with the same paint. I have lots of scrap left over from the kitchen install so I will be testing this out sometime this week. I'll try to remember to come back and update

Are ikea doors even made out of wood or are they all thermofoil? If they have a paper veneer on them I would be wary of painting them.

We're planning a kitchen renovation. We like the look and functionality of the Ikea cabinets, but were debating doing a custom color. I saw online that there are companies that will make you custom doors, and that you might even have a professional place just paint the stock doors for you, for less.

Anyone tried this?
