I'm the shiny hugo-boss owner up-thread and too have switched to mostly dresses. I am, however, looking for a job and I only feel comfortable interviewing in a traditional suit.

I'm the other Hugo Boss poster and I have also stopped wearing suits to meetings. However, I do need a suit for board meetings, as there's really nothing else that would be suitable. Anyway, the search continues. I'm going to check out Theory and maybe Classiques (Nordstrom's line) next.

OP here - good to hear that other people are having similar issues with finding suiting, but a little disheartened there seems to be a lack of good options?

For me it is not so much that I am that hard to fit as that the quality and style of off the rack suiting seems to be terrible these days. I am just looking for some high quality wool suits in a conservative but modern cut. I do not want polyester and I do not want to look fashion forward.

I took a Hugo Boss suit to my tailor to see if it was worth tailoring. She was horrified to hear it cost $750 on sale and said there was no way it was worth that much.

I can't remember the name of the company, but a sales rep came to my office a few years ago from a company that makes custom suits for women. do not think they had a storefront, just came to offices/homes. Am sure not cheap, but at least the business model exists somewhere.

I'm a new OP, and I've been looking for a new suit for 5 years. The problem with off the rack suits are: (1) ones at low to midrange stores (limited, ann taylor, etc) are made from very cheap fabrics and look cheap; (2) banana doesn't really make suits anymore, and a lot of the other stand bys have really cut their lines (have you looked at the small number of offerings from Theory lately?); (3) the next level up (J Crew, Theory, etc) have all been using an incredibly unflattering silhouette for the last 5 years. One silhouette is a long jacket that hits at the hip and has very little tailoring. It screams "out of law school interview jacket" and no one ever looks that great in it. Think this: http://www.hugoboss.com/us/%27julea%27-stretch-virgin-wool-jacket/hbna50291853.html?cgid=11003&dwvar_hbna50291853_color=480_Open%20Blue#gclid=CPOI0fzIm88CFQqEfgodCe0I4A&start=1

The other silhouette is an "edgier" jacket that is maybe A-line or not meant to be buttoned boxier thing. It looks ridiculous. When I wear my suits from 10 years ago (two button jackets, shorter, and very tailored) I still get compliments and people asking me where I got it. This this: http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/theory-lanai-edition-open-blazer?ID=1565005&CategoryID=10527&LinkType=#fn=BRAND%3DTheory%26ppp%3D180%26spp%3D4%26sp%3D1%26rid%3D8|BOOST SAVED SET|BOOST ATTRIBUTE%26spc%3D19%26rsid%3D%26pn%3D1|3|undefined|

I would love to find a tailor to make a nice suit at $1500.

I actually have that hugo boss suit jacket and pants and am seriously considering returning them to Nordstrom. I have warn it a few times but have NOT dry cleaned it yet and it's getting shiny. Shiny! Cheap suit/expensive price.

I'm the PP and the second jacket I posted was meant to accompany my text about the weird boxy silhouette. Not my 10 year old jacket that I get compliments on

A good tailor can do wonders. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so try to find a jacket that fits there. Shortening the sleeve length and taking in the waist are easy.

I just spoke to my tailor about this (he is a haberdasher). He said his start at $2,200. That's too pricey for me, to be honest. He also said I should be okay getting off the rack suits and having them tailored to me. I guess I'm not as hard to fit as I thought (I'm 5'0" and need proper, old school business suits). It's very frustrating.

Where do I get a custom suit made? Has anyone done this? Is it worth it over buying off the rack?
