Locust Grove Nature Center used to have hissing cockroaches that they showed the kids if that would be of interest.

But they're dead, right? (Bonus for me, but not quite as cool for him).

Not only are they not dead, but they also do a tarantula feeding where they put the tarantula out on the floor, the kids gather around in a circle, and they show a tarantula eat a live cricket (i think it was a cricket, but I can't quite recall). It's pretty cool; I definitely don't like spiders but it was cool to watch.

They have a pretty good insect/spider / creepy-crawly area of the museum. Your DS will love it.

Maybe it's just because I'm pre codfee, but what is NMNH?

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (probably in the insect zoo inside that museum)

The insect zoo at the NMNH may have them.

The invertebrate house at the zoo closed a while ago.

In April, U of MD has their open house day and they bring out all of the creepy insects in the insect building.

I had to laugh at this post. I live in Arizona and my neighbor and I were just talking about finding in our pools, backyard or extra bedroom this afternoon! Thankfully they were the extra large ones, which, while still not wanted, aren't deadly like the tiny ones. I wish I could mail you one.

You may also want to try local nature centers.

Does anybody know if there's a zoo in this area with live scorpions? My 6yo is obsessed and Google isn't helping me ... everything is either the band (they're still around???!!!!) Or exterminators.
