I actually posted this same question about a year ago when my daughter was 6 months old. I agonized what to get, and in the end we just got what we wanted. The walking/falling phase is pretty short, so if you watch your kids then, you will be fine!

We have an L-shaped sectional. We got a pie-shaped coffee table which worked out. When the kids were little, we didn't let them sit on the couch without one of us. We have big soft lounge chairs on the other side of the coffee table and they could sit on those without us. So, without us, they could be on the rounded side of the coffee table. With us, they could be on the side with the flat edges and the one corner.

I asked this question on this forum a few months ago. I got the CB2 lucite peekaboo table-- not everyone's taste but rounded edges and seems pretty sturdy. The "tall" one is like normal coffee table height- the normal one is tiny.

Look for Danish teak mid-century coffee tables. They tend to have rounded edges

My youngest is actually 6 and we've been living with nesting side tables and open space. I think we are ready for a coffee table, I'm just thinking that the glass may be too extremely adult. While my kids don't usually jump on the furniture, I don't want to have to keep constant watch or regret an accident. The Target table may be a good solution, since we can also kick our feet up on it or use it as extra seating when we have guests.

As someone who bought a nice walnut coffee table, even though it's round, I would recommend you forgo the coffee table until the youngest is 2 or 3. Unless youhave a TON of space. We put our table to the side every morning so the kids can play. Wish I could afford to get rid of the thing and buy a new one in a few years.

If you dont have one already, ottoman with large tray on top. I had a preexisting glass/wrought iron one, and bumpered the heck out of it.

Storage Ottoman - great place for toys and no sharp corners.

We got something similar to this from Target. Kinda fugly but has held up well so far. Will replace once kids are a bit older.

We switched to a tufted storage ottoman once our oldest started walking, with a tray on top for when we need a flat surface for drinks or whatever. Also replaced our square side tables with round ones.

We got one from pottery barn that is soft and covered in fabric- size of a coffee table but bigger than an ottoman

We got rid of the glass/iron table when the kids were born. 10 years later the kids still love the open floor space.

After dinner, DH and I watch the news on the couch. The kids play on the floor-- do homework, read a book, do a puzzle or play a game together. It's our evening family time.

Spouse is an er doc and sees so many facial injuries from coffee tables.

What would you recommend? I have my eye on a beatiful glass and pewter table but am thinking I will regret it. We are looking for something that is no longer than 48 inches long and we'd like to spend less than $600. Would love a link to products on the market.
