I would handle it by passing in the information to the colleague (if he or she didn't directly get it as well) and otherwise stay out of it and myob.

Recruiters cold call people all the time.

Maybe your colleague did it on purpose, to show you that others are interested in them and to use that as leverage for something down the line!

I'd look into a different voice mail system

If you are not their supervisor, just give them the message and delete it from the voicemail.

What's your role in office? If anything other than this person's direct supervisor (or up the chain), the gracefully ignore.

This call was:

Are you this person's superior? If not, ignore it. Whether the call was solicited or not, it's not your business at all.

"So-and-so, at number XXX-XXX-XXXX, called for you on [date]."

Recruiters call all the time, not just when you are looking for a job. I doubt your colleague actually gave a recruiter his office phone number, you would use a personal cell phone number. I bet the recruiter / headhunter just got a copy of your office phone directory or got the number off your website or something and called.

We're a relatively small firm and because we all work on the same projects we have a voicemail system that sends an email to all of us. Apparently, a colleague has been looking for other jobs and a headhunter left a message from their communication. How would you handle it?
