NP, but it struck me the wrong way too. OP is worried about something and asking for the perspective of other parents. PP doesn't have that perspective, so she probably should have stayed out of it. Instead, she decided to comment about how her (PP's) plan is so much better and she won't have to worry at all about the thing that OP is worrying about. Plus, the smugness.

I don't think she said it was better, just different. There's nothing wrong with that, nor is there anything wrong with being an older parent, is there?

I'm 53 and can't imagine a better life than I have right now with my DH and our two teenagers (and our dog ). Thank you for the well wishes!

60 years old with a 22-year-old. Trying to remember back to high school. I don't think that sleep and energy were the issues so much as facing dd's very serious emotional problems from which she was just starting to emerge when she was sexually assaulted at school and things spiraled down again.

You don't lose sleep because they wake you up in the middle of the night. You lose sleep due to worry. Glad to say that she is doing very well now but her adolescence was very tough. Keep an eye out for emotional problems and be willing to get your kid the help they need.

We will be in our early-mid 50s when our kids are in middle/high school so this thread is of interest to me. I often joke that I will be so deaf and senile by then that I won't be able to head my kids sneaking in/out of the house...but seriously I am nervous, mostly about retirement and college happening so close together.

We want to retire (and are financially planning to do so) in our late 60s, but know that our kids will likely just be finishing college. We want to be able to help them out as needed when they first start out in the world...but we also want to retire!

I am 60 with a 19 and 23yr old and the college thing was more of a struggle, since retirement is looming for me and I was not inclined to go into debt on big ticket tuitions. It was also exhausting waiting for them to return from dates, parties etc. Other than that it is no abnormal challenge.

I'm 52 w/a 12 and 16 yr old. I am amazed at how much energy they still require. Unless I want them zoning out on their screens and eating junky food, it's constant. Sure they do their chores, but not like an adult does chores. Yes they help around the house, but not like adults. They require a lot of input. And money. Money flies out of my wallet like it's made of helium. I take the paper once/week (Sunday) and I did not get to read it this week. Yet. I wanted to do a little shopping for myself yesterday - no. Did not happen. Between an impromptu dinner party and last minute school and food shopping, no. I did get to bed at a reasonable hour, but I did not get to read in bed, as I like to. Also, DH and I waited til kids were out of the house this a.m. to have sex, instead of late last night, because they were awake late. We are all in good health though I do not exercise as much as I should. Good luck! It passes quickly - do not wish it away!

63 with kids in HS. We were very tired until they got their drivers license, then just very worried. we are recommending State colleges for our teens b/c we need to save for retirement. Train them young to help you around the house -- you will need it. And to be independent abut their clothes (wash, dry put away) paperwork, applications. Push independence. when ours finish college -- we are DONE.

I'm 53, in good health, with a 5 and 8 year old. Would love to hear what it's like being an older mom of teens. Right now it is not Much of an issue as long as I get enough sleep and exercise.
