My DS's freshman dorm was the opposite. They had two people in dorms built as single in the 1950s. It was as wide a the bunk beds (narrower where the closet was) and about twice as long. They had to share a small closet, no AC, they had to stack the dressers on top of each other to make everything work. It was the cheapest on campus. Bathrooms down the hall and shred with whole hall.

At my kid's school, the crappiest dorm was one of the most expensive, IDK why. (tiny rooms, no AC, shared bathrooms, etc.) It was also the party/social dorm, though (800 freshmen in one building - woo hoo!) so I guess people were willing to pay for the "experience."

The dorm with triples (huge room, small kitchenette, private bathroom) was cheapest.

We just toured Williams and they said 60% of freshman had singles. We could not see one as it was move in day.

At my undergrad (Dartmouth) there is an application dorm cluster that freshmen can apply to that offers a configuration of an exterior door with a landing space that leads to 3 doors - one is a full bath and the others are two single rooms. So you share a front door and a bathroom with your suitemate but you need a separate key to open your own bedroom door. But you can't pay extra to get it, it's just luck if your application is accepted.

A friend went to Elon and had a 4 BR/4 BA apartment. So single rooms with own bathroom, but shared living space. It was campus housing, but this was as a senior - not sure it was available for freshman.

My DC went to a college that charged slightly more for some dorms, mostly the apartment style ones. But the differential was minimal, maybe $400/year, so not a segregator. And these were only available to upperclassmen, mostly seniors and a handful of juniors with high lottery numbers.

Um...no. I have heard of single rooms for freshman at a very few places but they always share a big hallway bathroom. If you want a private room with a shower I think you may have to look at hotels nearby.

In another thread someone mentioned "...the economic segregation that ensued on campus by having different options for paying for fancy versus less fancy dorms..." at Washington University in St. Louis. Does anyone know what kind of dorm options exist there - do they have single rooms with private shower? Are there any universities where a single room/shower is available? Thank you in advance!
