Actually, he's taking classes at MC while working full time to support his young daughter.

This was in NY, but a girl I became friends with in high school told me she'd been left back twice. She was 20 when she graduated. She's worked as a 911 operator for years. So please stop thinking old high schoolers are useless criminals who add nothing to society.

I knew a handful of people who turned 19 right before graduating. I'd rather have them around and in class than have 13 year olds in high school. (Traditionally a student turns 13 in 7th grade.)

I agree.

I've had a few 19 yo in my freshmen English classes.

They eventually drop out b/c some tough teachers refuse to pass them, as their skill level is so low. Or they graduate (b/c admin passes them along and overturns grades). But they land in jail or out of work.

They are raising the dropout age from 16 to 18. But kids can drop out at any age really. As long as classroom attendance records (absences) are accurate, it's up to the PPWs, school counselors, psychologists, etc. to deal with the truancy boards. But you can never force a kid to return if the parents are negligent. And CPS rarely does what it needs to do.

The kid who gave a speech at my niece's graduation failed his senior year twice. He was 20 when he graduated. Not ideal, but the fact that he stuck with it says something about his character.

Curious to know OP how you know there's an 18 yr old sophomore. In high school, classes can be mixed grades. You would only know the grade level based on credits earned.

Students have a right to free publoc education until they graduate or turn 21. So PP is correct that the year they turn 21 has to be the end. But it's rare--those kids are usually transitioned to alternative programs, or have some other circumstances going on.
