OP if you are not a troll then you need to not only know that Africa is made up of over 50 countries , but that also within the those countries there are many tribes each with their own way of naming children . Not only are Africans capable of saying foreign names but a large number do have foreign first names .. And why on earth would your child not be able to make friends because of his or her name ? Is this what pertains where you live?

Africans are capable of saying "Elizabeth" or even "Taylor," "Jane," "Annie," "Rose," or even boys' names. I'm sure you don't mean to suggest that the naming has anything to do with the capacity of Africans to pronounced the child's Western name, right? You mean to commemorate your family's visit by taking on an African name to honor the people hosting you or this family memory, certainly.

+1 NP here. OP what country, or if you don't want to reveal that, what region? Many of us on DCUM have lived in one or more countries in Africa (myself included) and could give suggestions but we're not going to do big generalizations like you have done. Your post was not too clear.

I dated three Nigerian (Yoruba) men before I married a man from a different West African country and was so bummed that I couldn't use "Ayo" for a daughter anymore.

It would have fit DD well. DS would have had Babatunde as a middle name because he IS his grandfather returned. Oh well.

Ask around while you're there. There are so many cool names that fit particular circumstance. You may even be able to find a name that means "born far from home."

Obviously, you'll draw from the community in which you're ensconced---not some random name from another African country. That would defeat the whole point of naming the child in this manner. "We were living in Kenya the year she was born, so we named her [Zambian name]." Er, what?!

Exactly. Ideally, you should pick a name that reflects both the correct country and tribe. It would be strange to give a child born in West Africa an East African name and vice versa.
