We had pay phones growing up. There are no more pay phones.

They don't need a phone, truth is nobody NEEDS a phone. Until recently we all went everywhere without cell phones. Traveled the world. People climbing Mt. Everets carried radios in case they were about to die. Are cell phones useful? Definitely, and why not use the technology that we have that can make our lives easier? So, if you can afford, it why not? I am not sure why there is so much concern with some parents buying their kids phones, is it that they might talk to their friends sometimes? My DS middle school clears out pretty quickly after the bell rings, especially the office workers. I'd get at least a flip phone for emergencies. He once left his lunch box in his gym locker (had gym last period) and realized just as he was getting in the car. He ran back in but the locker room was already locked and the school office was vacant. We're talking maybe 10 minutes after the bell rang.

Do they need a phone, probably not, Would a phone be nice, probably so. Why not see how things go for a bit. Mine doesn't have one, although the plan is to get her one but haven't had time to actually do it yet and she is surviving.

My elementary age child rides the bus and then walks home by himself. He doesn't have a phone. He does have common sense though. If he misses the bus that means he is at school and can use the schools phone to call me.

I'm sure your MS child could borrow someone else's phone, that said, you're going to need to get DC a phone sometime, why not now? I always ask for texts when on the bus and when home and it is nice. also easier for you .
