We took 1 day out if 7 days for the Wright Mem, lighthouse, and a drive down to Hatteras. Those were just as fun and interesting as the beach. Yes, the beach is super fun and relaxing, but there's nothing wrong to take a day (or even 2 days) for other cool things that are so close by. And I think that was what OP was asking.

Fly kite. Boogieboard. Two person sea kayak. Build sand castle. Chase ghost crabs by flashlight. Fish from beach.

We did surfing lessons, jet skiing, fishing, first flight adventure park.

The lighthouse tip is wrong, plenty of tickets when we went to Hatteras Light. There is a little musuem, and a toystore at the turn on the highway as well as a kid friendly burger grill.

The one in Hatteras is impossible to do bc you need timed tickets....which sell out by 9am (when they open the ticket office). And only allow 8 people every 30 min. so unless you want to drive from Duck to Hatteras at 8am to stand in line you may want to skip it.

We went to the Corolla one. There aren't as many restrictions and your 6 yr old is free.

The aquarium was ok. Pricey. The jellyfish exhibit wasnt working and a few other videos/interactive screens weren't either.

Try the Roanoke Island lost colony. My kids are fascinated by that. There's a really small children's museum too, Outer Banks Child. Museum, in Kitty Hawk.

Of course there's the Wright Bros Men if your 6 yr old loves planes. And mini golfing.

The aquarium in Manteo has just been remodeled, so it may be worth a visit again. I know my dd loves to go every year.

Rent a jet ski (if that's not part of your normal activities), go out on a dolphin tour, do a Wild Horse tour in Corolla, take the ferry to Ocracoke Island for the day, go to one of the marinas in the late afternoon and watch the charter fishing boats unload (my boys love this).

How about going to the top of a light house?

We're heading to Duck next week and wondering if anyone has some fun ideas for our 6YO. We explored Jockey's Ridge, the Manteo Aquarium, and the Elizabethan Gardens on our last trip three years ago. Now that he's older, we are seeking some new places to see. We do plan on attempting again to fly kites on Jockey's Ridge. Thanks!
