Wow. I have a very bright 4th grader, but she isn't ready for 7th grade math in 5th grade. Is Basis just not the right school for her? We are from out of state. Her achievement levels are mid 5th in math and high 7th in reading.

Yes, you can move different math classes during the year but you have to speak to the different math teachers, director of academics, etc. I moved from math 7/6 to pre-algebra in 5th grade. Math 7/6 is the easiest, pre-algebra AKA math 8/7 in the middle and Algebra 1 is the hardest. Note: Algebra 1 kids that are in 5th grade have to take the same comp as the other grades in their class.

Curriculum isn't different - it's all Saxon math.

In that curriculum Geometry is covered in Algebra I and Algebra 2. You don't take a stand alone class called geometry.

That has caused issues for some students who leave Basis and go to a DCPS high school and they are told they must take a year of Geometry although they may have covered that content back in 6th or 7th grade. So BASIS has renamed the classes in hopes of easing those transitions. Not clear if it will work (for DCPS) but I think it's an easy change for them to make that may help students.

According to the new handbook, 2016-2017, the math classes for 5th grade are as follows:

5 Algebra I & Geometry
5 Intro to PreAlgebra
5 Mathematics

So maybe they renamed the classes. Algebra I stayed the same but maybe Intro to PreAlgebra is Math 8/7 and Mathematics is Math 7/6? Not sure if the curriculum changed or if it is just a name change.

They tested last week but I am not sure the kids have been placed in their actual classes yet or at least not all the kids have been placed.

Math 8/7 is the standard starting point for 5th grade at BASIS and is still advanced. Math 7/6 is for those who are not quite ready for 8/7. Math 8/7 is also considered pre-algebra course. Algebra 1/2 is for those who are not quite ready for Algebra 1 after Math 8/7. So normally 5th grade students start with either Math 7/6, Math 8/7, or Algebra 1.

I should add a caveat that they tried to have all the kids come in for math placement testing in the spring or summer in previous years.

It's very possible that this year they are testing all during first week or so of school.

The class sequence hasn't changed however. You can tell from the supply list distributed for the Math Department.

They try to give all students a placement test before the start of the year. That determines what class you are in. If you enrolled later in summer your child may not have been tested yet.

The math classes 5th and 6th graders are placed in are (in order):

Math 7/6
Math 8/7
Algebra 1/2 (aka Pre-Algebra)
Algebra 1

The rest of the sequence is:
Algebra 2
PreCalculus (a couple variants)
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics

Algebra would be the hardest. I am confused about the Pre-Algebra classes. Furthermore, have they placed the kids yet? I'm asking because my dc said something about practicing for the Math classes and that dc had not yet been placed? Of course it is highly probable that dc was confused.
