Waterbed crib mattress? OMG.
Every lease I ever signed has had a clause banning them. I'm assuming because of leaks.

One of my landlords said it was as much because of the overall weight as the possibility of a leak.

waterbed crib mattress?? How did 80s babies ever survive

my lil bro born in 85 slept face-down on a sheepskin. I'm convinced that the Back to Sleep campaign is a huge factor in people having smaller families these days.

Ugh. My husband had one before we married. One person rolls over, you both roll over. When I slept over I stayed halfway on the solid leather frame of the bed for stability. I suffered from all sorts of back and chest pain after sleeping on that thing.

And power outages? You're either sleeping on frigid water or you find somewhere else to sleep. Awful.

My dad bought me a waterbed when I was a teen in the 80s. I loved that bed.

Because leaks and plug-in vibrators. Dangerous.

I knew a lot of people whose parents had them back in the '80s. They always seemed very paranoid about them springing a leak. So I'd guess they weren't very sturdy. And I also think they were terrible for your back and I couldn't imagine sleeping on one. They made me nauseated.

No back/spine/neck support whatsoever.

Because they were cheesy, expensive, and really not that comfortable.

What was the original appeal (besides novelty)?

You never see them now! They were comfortable (at least when I tried them in the 80s as a kid). Do you know anyone who has one now?
