Well, but evangelical protestants call themselves specifically Christians - so people are right to be confused.

If we're discussing world religions, I say I am Christian. If discussing US religion, I say I am protestant. If getting to the nitty gritty of churches, I say I am Presbyterian.

I had a friend in college who called himself a recovering Catholic.

What? Anglicans aren't Reformed (which refers to Calvinism).

If I'm speaking to a non-Christian whom I know doesn't have a great knowledge of the various denominations within Christianity, I'll just say I'm Christian in which case I'm not referring to any specific denomination. If I'm speaking to another Christian or someone whom I have reason to believe knows of the various denominations, I'll be more specific and mention I'm Presbytarian.

And often think that they have the corner on the title of Christian. I'm Catholic and once got a fund-raising letter from a friend raising money for a mission trip talking about how it was important because Christianity was only the third most common religion in that country, the first two being Islam and Catholicism.

I just say Christian. I grew up Presbyterian, but now go to a non denominational church. I'm guessing most Protestants just say Christian, unless they have a specific reason for going to a certain denominational church, like some will say they are Baptist.

If someone says they are Christian. What denominations does that typically refer to?

So for example, a Catholic is more likely to say they are Catholic. What about Lutherans or Methodists?
