How do you fix DC's humidity problem in the summer?

A large dehumidifier that sits between Buffalo and Miami.

Do you turn off your refrigerator and your air conditioning too? They are basically the same.

not refrigerator but AC, yes - not b/c fire hazard but to save power.

i had a burnt plug once (which i didn't know until much later. it was burnt pretty bad.) so i maybe overly cautious. dedicated circuits are fine (e.g., refrigerator) b/c they are sized correctly. it's the non-dedicated circuits (like the ones you connect your humidifier) that can overload and cause fire.

To each their own, and I have my own little paranoia about fire and water, but your refrigerator is probably not on a dedicated circuit. Your A/C probably is. And an overloaded circuit would shut down at the breaker anyway. Nonetheless, appliances DO sometimes catch fire, so I understand your sense of caution. Anything that cycles on and off on its own could present that risk.

When I'm gone more than a week, I attach a drain hose to the dehumidifier and put it up on the counter of the basement bathroom sink, running the drain house into the sink. Not an optimal arrangement during normal use, but it takes care of things when we are away.

I agree. Turn off any unnecessary electronics/applicances before you go.

Op here. Setting to 30% when we get back is a great suggestion. Thanks!

It's been a problem for 47 years, I'll tear it down before ripping off the band-aid. Pretty much everyone I know in the area with a basement has a dehumidifier running all summer.

Maybe give one of your neighbors a key and ask them to come in twice when you're gone? I would do it, should take all of 5 min each time.

You leave it off for two weeks and turn it back on when you come back. Some people live w/o a humidifier in the basement.

We have a 70-pint dehumidifier in our finished basement that needs to be emptied daily in the summer. We're going away for 2-weeks and have no options for hose drainage hookup. Is it terrible to leave it off for 2 weeks or do I need to try to get someone in come here to empty every couple days?
