What that we don't lie about if our kids read.

It strikes as really odd that someone would lie about their kid reading if they don't.

My rising 2nd grader had a suggested list somewhere, but he read other stuff instead. Some days he does not read, but on others, he finishes two chapter books (simple ones, like ABC Mysteries or the Arnie the Donut series).

When he is older, yes, I will require him to read the required books. It's not that hard and it's important to be able to keep up and chime in if the teacher discuses the books. Team player skills, etc.. etc...

No, I would not lie. DS can either read the books, or live with the consequences of not doing so.

Why would you lie? Its very easy to tell when someone hasn't read something...

Of course not. We don't have an assigned list, but we are doing library summer reading. My kid loves to read so it's no problem!

Writing on the other hand is a real struggle.

My DD reads them and others. Easy enough.

Oh wait. Are you talking about a school assigned summer reading list? Gosh, I hate those. I would strongly encourage my kid to read them. But its summer. As long as they're reading, I don't care if its "approved" or not. I wouldn't lie for my kids, but its okay with me if they'd rather read something else.

No, we do not lie. One of my kids is a bookworm and reads constantly. If he brings me a stack of books he says he read, I believe him. Other kid is not as strong a reader. He tried to tell me he read "Charlotte's Web" in 10 minutes. He has a rule that it has to be out loud with me for it to count. It took him a little longer than his brother, but such is life. He was still super proud that he won his coupon book.

Mine read the books. They love the books. I make them do the math, which seems to be optional at our school.

I did not force the writing activity journal this year for my 5th grader. It was an incredible amount of stupid busy work. He will go to school and it won't be done. Neither of us will lie about it and if the teachers ask, I will happily give them my thoughts.

As a child, I always read everything and more.
My oldest will not, because this summer he is working on his native language, and has a French reading list. Since he read the Lord of the Rings in English at 10, I'm not too concerned about his public school reading list.
