Doable to do both but Univeral much better IMO. Definitely bring all kids to Univeral. Lots of simulation rides (not all are just for older kids roller coasters) and shows.

From my reading of the disboards last year when I was planning, this is super common. If you're there for a week I see no reason not to hit up both.

You can easily do Universal in a day. Get the fast pass. Or stay one night on property and you get them for free. It's a great deal and you get into Harry Potter an hour before opening.

I would do both Disney and Universal and take all kids to both. We went to Universal with 4.5yo and 6.5yo last year and they had a blast. We bought a wand and they loved doing the spells.
Are you going during a school break? Then I agree you should stay on site for early entry and the free express passes. We went to HP for the early hour and then we got to go on all the other rides with less than a 15 min wait. We went to both Universal and Islands of Adventure. Plenty for the little ones. Dr Seuss, Marvel, Minions, ET, Toon area, shows, parades.
If you are going with multiple adults and kids, you could split up and meet back up pretty easily. We needed a mid day break. The parents were just as tired as the kids. We'd go back after lunch, rest, swim and then sometimes go back to the parks.

No not too hectic and not too much. 2 days at universal is perfect and you definitely should stay onsite and get the early entrance to hp world. (Which also applies to your day of check-in if you feel like going out early enough to pre check in)

You can do Disney in 2-3 days. You absolutely have enough time to both.

Experienced Orlando travelers: our family is going to Orlando for a week. Our original plan was Disney, but we now have two rabid Harry Potter fans. Older kids are 10 and 8; younger kids are 6 and 4 and we wouldn't be inclined to bring them to Harry Potter World.
Would it be waaaay too hectic to try to do two days at Harry Potter World/Universal and the rest of the time at Disney World? We had planned to stay at Disney's Art of Animation. I'm hearing from a friend that best bet for Harry Potter is to stay at a Universal resort to get in early before it's insanely crowded.
Too much? Do we need to focus in on just one? The plan would be for one parent to go to Universal with the big kids and the other to stay with the younger kids and stick around Disney.
