If your cat is smart enough to learn to stay off the table when you're around....you can bet he's on the table when you're not...

+1 to get glass cut. We used Banner Glass in Silver Spring and they were great. Our table is oval and the glass is great. I love it because it's easy to clean.

We had a circle of glass cut to match the top of the table (not expensive at all) and it has preserved our table despite daily abuse from two kids and animals. This worked so well we did it for the coffee table as well.

Keep the cats off the table! That's the first step.
We have a mango wood table that still looks great 2 years in. And it was cheap.

Your table is probably made of a soft wood such as pine. Go for one made of a hardwood such as oak, ash, birch, or maple and you'll have a much longer lasting table top. Oak and ash are the best options for durability.
