These days, even if you are NRI, there is a big push within India to have children adopted within India before outside of India. Older children and those with special needs are available more faster outside of India.

We adopted from Matri Sneha in Kolkata because we have ties to Kolkata. The nonprofit agency that worked with us in the United States was Dillon International. Healthy, full term infant girl. Very good care at Matri Sneha. This was prior to the requirement for CARA approval, so adoptions went quicker than they do today. We are not NRI. Since you are NRI, your adoption would go more quickly.

I'd check both the Department of State adoption page and an agency that handles adoption from India. The biggest issue I found was the paperwork and approvals required to bring my internationally adopted kids to the US. You have to get pre-approval from the US Government. And while you're in country you have to get a medical examination and final embassy approval. It's been awhile for me and in the middle of the last adoption the process changed so I don't have the personal experience with the current immigration process and I have no experience with India.
