the only down side is that you need to be aware that uber drivers do not HAVE to accept rides for people under 18. Uber's stated policy is no unaccompanied riders under 18. Having said that, we have frequently used it for our middle school kids and above and no one has ever been declined.

Make sure your teen pays attention to the decal and matches the face of the driver to the pic that is available through the app.

Nothing wrong with taxis, but the automatic payment option is a major plus for a teenager who may or may not have cash on hand (or a credit card). Also, the ability to contact one easily rather than waiting to see one on the street is also a benefit. I believe there is an app called DC Taxi where you can hail a taxi from your phone rather than standing on the street corner. It may also have a payment option, but I don't know how reliable it actually is compared to Uber or Lyft. I haven't used it yet.

^^ Forgot to add, I also like that I know how much the trip will cost before I request the car and I like not having to worry about tipping.

I'm not the OP but I have nothing against taxis. I like uber because I can track the car while it's on the way to pick me up and I love that the payment is done automatically through the app.

You can set up a family profile on your uber app. You can then send an invitation to your teen. Once they accept the invitation they can request rides on their phone using the family profile.

My kids take Uber, but they have it on their phone so they can schedule it themselves.

I have never had them take it by themselves, always with friends. So that would make me a little nervous, but if they have a phone, just be in communication with them.

We have used it to get home from concerts... too late for me.
They went to a party and their ride home fell through and I had been drinking wine, so I had the group take Uber home.

Thinking about doing it for my kid because I can't get there. I read that parents do this. If so, what was your experience with it?
